Filmmakers have been in town all week shooting a documentary called "Bridging Urban America." The film shines the spotlight on the 118-year-old Government Bridge, and the man who designed it.

The film will focus on eight bridges built by master engineer Ralph Modjeski. But that will just scratch the surface of his life's work.

In all, Modjeski is responsible for 40 bridges here in the united states, including the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, the Ben Franklin in Philadelphia, and the Huey P. Long in New Orleans.

But there's something special about the Government Bridge, right here in the Quad Cities.

"The Government Bridge is the oldest," said Basia Myszynski, director & producer of the move. "So, you know, our fascination with this one is the first solo design."
And while all of his bridges are different, there's one thing you will find in each and every design.

"The power of the bridge is something I see in every one of his bridges.  You just know it's going to last so I do see that," Myszynski said.

Standing the test of time, something that was very important to Modjeski.

"He honestly believed that negligence would be the downfall of this country in terms of engineering.. and arrogance," Myszynski said.

But it's not just the strength and engineering you'll find in Modjeski's designs, you'll also see his artistic side. Something that may have come from his first love.
"First and foremost, he thought he was going to be a pianist.  He was a virtuoso pianist," Myszynski said.

So while a trip across the government bridge may be just an ordinary drive, remember there was nothing ordinary about the man who built it.

"Very basically, it's about a man and his love affair with America," Myszynski said.

The film will be released sometime next year. They hope to debut it in the cities where it was shot, so we may get to be among the first to see it here, in the Quad Cities.
