Davenport moving on long-term riverfront vision

Mayor says Skybridge might be more of a sky sculpture

All things are go and on schedule with Sterilite and the new Costco.

Great achievements.

Most recently the old Rhythm City barge left the riverfront. A lot of that will be converted into space for a park.

Now, the city's working to gauge public opinion for a long-term vision.

Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch joined 4 The Record to let us know how that's going.

"We have a plan," Klipsch said. "It's now, 'How are we going to deliver on that, protecting the beauty of the riverfront but at the same time looking at public-private partnership to help sustain those numbers?'"

As for the Skybridge and calls for it to be used more effectively, Klipsch took a different approach.

"A group of individuals who do planning along the river, they see that as a sky sculpture, actually," Klipsch said. "We talk about that and it's like our St. Louis Arch, that kind of an initiative. So how do we build around that? Is there things we can tie to it? Is there things that can complement it? All those will be taken into consideration as we move to the next steps."

One thing that's stirred up a bit of controversy is the proposal to build a miniature golf course alongside Modern Woodmen Park. It's space that's not being utilized.

"If this is another activity that doesn't cost the city or the taxpayers any money and can complement it, I think if we can work that out it'd be a great addition," Klipsch said.
