4th annual domestic violence march

the Rock Island Arsenal is helping raise awareness and support those affected

ROCK ISLAND, Illinois - The 4th annual domestic violence march will take place Thursday morning on the Rock Island Arsenal.

October is domestic violence awareness and prevention month.

According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, on average, nearly 20 people per minute are physically abused in the United Sates; that equates to more than 10 million women and men.

Purple is also the color used to symbolize domestic violence awareness, it symbolizes peace and courage for the survivors.

Rock Island Arsenal Domestic Violence victim advocate Samantha Mathew said the march is a good way for people who have been affected by domestic violence to show their support and build awareness for it.

She said this year they hope to have more soldier involvement and help people understand that it can happen to anyone at anytime.

Recovering from a domestic violence situation can be different for each person.

She said when a victim decides to leave it can be the most lethal and scariest time.

"Something unique about the military is they have two options of a reporting," Mathew said. "If a service member is going through domestic violence they can come to an advocate and make a restricted report so that's just going to stay with the advocate and that victim and I can work out a plan," said Mathew.

"If they want it to go further we can talk with command they can make an unrestricted report and I'll go to command and then command will be aware of the situation and we can go from there and get them more resources," Mathew said.

Thursday's march will start at 11a.m. along Rodman Avenue and end at the exchange parking lot for closing remarks.

Signs a person is being abused are isolation, marks bruises on the body, wearing long sleeves in the wrong season, wearing lots of makeup or wearing sunglasses indoors.
