You can pick up the phone and be armed with an alarm at no charge.

The American Red Cross is working with local cities to install 700 smoke alarms in the area. It's the largest  campaign of its kind in the Quad Cities.

Organizers hope every home will have working smoke alarms eventually. All of the installation work is being for free. You just have to call to set up an appointment.

"So we are encouraging every resident in our area to make sure they are checking their smoke alarms and making sure they are working and practicing their escape routes. So again this program for the sound the alarm is absolutely free to the community. Individuals who need smoke alarms there are no strings attached. We want to make sure all our neighbors are safe."

You have a little more than a month and a half to put in your order. Smoke alarm requests must be submitted before October 14.
