A teen charged in the murder of his parents displayed signs of trouble

Why nobody took his threats seriously

DEWITT, Iowa - "It's crazy to have known somebody that did all that and went through all that, it's mind blowing honestly," says Caitlin Lohse.

Caitlin Lohse has known Gavin Glasz since middle school.

She says Glasz used to be outgoing and funny but all of that changed after his freshman year.

"He just got into really bad things, and just went completely down hill from there. It never got better," says Lohse.

During his time at DeWitt High School, Lohse says Glasz vandalized the school, disrupted classes, harassed students and even made a threat towards classmates before graduation.

He posted all of it on social media.

Besides the last threat against students, Lohse says no one took him seriously until it was too late.

On June 13th Glasz was arrested in connection to the death of his parents.

"That's when I realized that we should've taken those threats and everything he was saying absolutely seriously, because it could've been somebody else," says Lohse.

Looking back, Lohse thinks this tragedy could've been prevented, if only someone had bothered to reach out and see what was going on.

She says maybe Glasz wasn't just acting out, maybe he was crying for help.

"If you would've just read his social media account, you would've known that whoever was running that social media account really needed help," says Lohse. "I wish that somebody would've actually said something, instead of people, instead of us just making fun of his account or people just not taking him seriously at  all."

Lohse says she hopes this tragedy opens peoples eyes to those who might be suffering around them.

"There's always going to be a next time, and so I hope somebody really takes it seriously and tries to help that person get help before it progresses too far," says Lohse.
