Bettendorf school board candidate faces concerns over past with the district

McEnany says she is ready to move on

BETTENDORF, Iowa - Bettendorf School Board elections are just around the corner. Maxine McEnany is one of seven candidates, vying for one of the three available spots on the board. But, some parents are worried about her past with the school district.

"What I find so awkward about it is, she was an employee of the school district, and resigned this year," says Joanna Doerder of Bettendorf. "And now, wants to be on the board of a district that she has settled with."

As former finance director, McEnany says she brought some issues to the attention of the Iowa financial auditor. Shortly after that, she says it was simply time to move on.

"Some issues happened that, at that point, we decided that we had a parting of the ways," said McEnany. "And I had a contractual buyout."

More than eight months later, McEnany is hoping for enough support to get back into the district.

"On a different role, and out talking to people, I see so many things that can be done," McEnany said. "You kind of forget about all the past, and think 'this isn't about me, this is about the kids. This whole thing isn't about me. I see things I can do, and I would like to help."

Parents, like Joanna Doerder, say they want people that are not only focused on the kids, but focused on cooperating with everyone on the board.

"People who are willing to work together with the other board members," Doerder said. "That's been something that I have seen, a lot of tension on the board. A lot of miscommunication, or a lack of communication."

For McEnany, she says she hopes for the opportunity to not only work in the district, but once again serve the Bettendorf community.

"It would be kind of fun to see this end of it for a while, and help make decisions that could make a difference for the kids," McEnany said. "So, I would look forward to that."

School Board elections in Bettendorf take place on September 12.
