Centennial Bridge to be renamed

Illinois State Trooper who died on the bridge in 2002 to be honored

While much has been said and written about what the Illinois Legislature didn't accomplish this session, there are some things they were finally able to agree upon.

They passed a resolution that failed last year to rename the Centennial Bridge in honor of an Illinois State Trooper who died on the bridge in 2002 while responding to a call: Master Sergeant Stanley Talbot.

Sgt. Talbot died from injuries he received after a routine safety check turned into a chase and Talbot was dragged several blocks.

Local 4 News has learned that a re-dedication/renaming ceremony has been scheduled for July 17 outside the Rock Island County Courthouse.

The bridge opened in 1940 as a toll bridge. It was lighted in 1988 and has become an icon of the Quad Cities skyline.
