Diocese of Davenport has new leader

Zinkula becomes 9th bishop

BETTENDORF, Iowa - The Diocese of Davenport officially installed their 9th bishop at mass on Thursday.

Thomas Zinkula became the next bishop for the Diocese of Davenport, which houses a total population of over 500,000,100,000 of which are Roman Catholic.

"Well, it's lots of different emotions for me," said Zinkula. "It's kind of surreal."

Zinkula says he hasn't been able to spend a lot of time in the diocese yet, but is excited to get to know the people he is serving.

"I am going to start out by listening and learning, I'm going to bring myself and I'm going to try to be myself, that's what I've been telling myself," said Zinkula. "Just try to get to know people and the situation here and learn how to be a Bishop. I don't have any plans to change this or change that."

Zinkula was born and raised on a farm outside of Mount Vernon, Iowa. He was baptized in the Diocese of Davenport.

He attended Cornell College in Mount Vernon where he was a football star. After, he went on to the University of Iowa in Iowa City for law school. He was an attorney for three years, but felt a strong call to the priesthood.

"It was part of my route, it helped me to be a priest and now to be a Bishop."

He entered the priesthood in 1990, and has most recently served in Dubuque as a seminary rector. He is following up former Bishop Martin Amos as the 9th Bishop in the 135 year old diocese.

He says he is taking the same philosophy he always has had into his relationship with the people in the diocese.

"As a pastor as a rector of seminarians, this is like a marriage," said Zinkula. "I want to be faithful, I'm going to give myself fully to these people that I'm serving and love them unconditionally."
