Coal Valley Days draws thousands of people

More people means more money for local non-profits

COAL VALLEY, Illinois - "Good clean family fun. It's a fun day, you get to see lots of your neighbors," says Val Jones.

Coal Valley Days has something for everyone.

The carnival, parade, car show and live music draws large crowds every year.

"About 2,500 to 3,000 people come through," says Stephanie Genova.

Director Stephanie Genova says the event keeps growing to attract more people and raise more money.

She says all the funds raised go to various non-profits in the community.

"We have arrowhead ranch with us this year, they brought out some of their boys to help volunteer so we're going to donate some of the money that we make this year back to them."

Local organizations also take advantage of the large crowds.

The Coal Valley Lions Club spent their day selling pork chop sandwiches to raise funds for their various projects.

"They're the best, we haven't had any complaints yet," says Richard Vandekerkhove.

Member Richard Vandekerkhove says the organization helps people in Coal Valley and Moline with anything from hearing aids, food, toys and clothing.

The group also works on various community development projects throughout the cities.

"Provided books for the library up at the school and the day care, we had a building and some trees put in for them," says Vandekerkhove.

The Lions Club says if there's a need, they try to fill it one pork chop sandwich at a time.

"Help us help the community and the only way we can do it is fundraisers like these," says Vandekerkhove.
