Dr. Jill Biden visits Quad Cities

She spoke to Quad Cities YWCA guests and honorees

The Quad Cities YWCA is celebrating 100 years in existence. To mark the occasion, the YWCA recognized 100 Quad Citizens who have gone above and beyond for our cities. This was the inspiration of the theme, "100 Years, 100 Honored." At today's celebration, former Second Lady Dr. Jill Biden spoke to the guests and honorees.

Thinking of the times she has visited the area, she said "what I remember the most, was the kindness and the generosity of Iowans. You represent the best of America."

Davenport Mayor Frank Klipsch and Moline Mayor Stephanie Acri were among those honored by the YWCA.

In 1917, the YWCA was founded amidst the Women's Suffrage movement, and has since dedicated itself to focus on empowering women. Today their mission is to level the playing field for local children so they may all grow with many opportunities.

A member of the Board of Directors, Amy Balensiefen, said of their efforts, "our child care center, within five miles, every 2 out of 5 children lives in poverty. And although we are able to serve up to 130 kids a day, we still have to turn away 50 every year."

It is expected the even today will have raised over $60,000 dollars to go to helping local children.
