Early morning fire sends firefighter to hospital

A Rock Island firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation and released

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - An early morning fire is still under investigation in Rock Island. 

Crews were called out to a structure fire at 500 W. 7th St. around 5 a.m. Sunday, according to the Rock Island Fire Department. The building was a former grocery store. 

When crews got to the scene, they found the building already in flames. According to the Rock Island Fire Department, it took a couple of hours to put it out. The fire sent one firefighter to the hospital for smoke inhalation. He has since been released. 

The cause of this fire is unknown. The area is still blocked off as crews continue to investigate.
