Fire crews return to I-80 Equipment after rekindling

Colona, Illinois - UPDATE: Crews are back on the scene Thursday at I-80 Equipment after the fire rekindled.

Colona, Coal Valley and Silvis fire departments are present.

It's been part of a busy 24 hours for the Colona and other departments.

February 7, Colona Fire said they responded to the business in rural Henry County to find a fire in the attic of the warehouse-style building.

The fire required a massive response to the fire, which destroyed the north part of the building, housing mainly offices.

Colona Fire said they attempted to fight the fire from the ground but dangerous materials stored inside limited their options.

They had to pour water on the fire from above.

Departments for six counties responded to the fire.

Colona said they were assisted by Sherrard, Andover, Atkinson, Cambridge, Village of Cleveland, Osco, Moline Air 2nd Alarmers, Eldridge, Greene Township, Bishop Hill, Galva, Bettendorf, Rapids City, Andalusia, Rock Island, Hampton, Albany, Genesis Ambulance, Anawan, Geneseo, Black Hawk Fire, Coal Valley, Riverdale, LeClaire, Orion, Cordova, Hillsdale, Silvis, Carbon Cliff\Barstow, Erie and Woodhull.
MetroLink also provided a bus as a warming shelter, and the Salvation Army provided food and water.

Local 4 News is also learning more about the business.

In December 2017, I-80 Equipment filed for bankruptcy, and those documents list nearly 100 creditors including employees, customers, and banks.

That's in addition to citation documents from the U.S. Department of Labor Occupational Safety and Health Administration.

Between 2015 and 2017, the business was cited three times. The latest was in Feb. 2017.

Penalties according to those documents total nearly $200,000.
