Davenport firefighters started their own fire Wednesday and turned it into an interactive classroom.
Crews sharpened their skills at a house on West Tenth Street where three new recruits trained on locating and setting up an attack.
The captain of the department Todd Whitchelo says chances like this don't come around very often.
"This was a great opportunity to get them into some live fires, some heat and some smoke. It's very difficult to train and simulate that environment. So we really wanted to take this opportunity and try to put them into a real structure fire."
Practice will continue at the house for a couple of weeks and then the home will be burned to the ground once it's no longer safe for the exercises.
