Former Davenport fire chief Lynn Washburn speaks after being allowed to return

Washburn will return to the Davenport Fire Department as a district chief

DAVENPORT, Iowa - Former fire chief Lynn Washburn is headed back to the Davenport Fire Department.
She says Wednesday's ruling leaves her feeling pleased to return, after an absence of over three months.
But that return will come with a lot of things to work out beforehand.

"There's a lot of logistics that are going to have to happen before any decision is going to be made," Washburn said. "We'll just wait to be notified, I'm sure my attorney will be notified, and we will wait for that to happen."

"The city's Civil Service Commission ruled that Washburn may return to the department as a district fire chief, but it's not clear which one that will be.

"I will just serve in whatever capacity or position that I am allowed to," said Washburn.

She says what matters most is working with the other firefighters.

"I've been very proud to work with and for those firefighters, and to serve the citizens of this community. That's what it's really all about."

This community, Washburn says, is something she has dedicated herself to since entering the department in 2011.

"That's my passion, to provide for their safety through fire service, which is my chosen career. And, I'm very very happy that I will get to continue that career."

And Washburn says she plans to commit herself tot he job for much longer.

"It was my intent to remain with the City of Davenport for several more years, and so I'm very happy I'll have that opportunity,"

Washburn says there are currently six positions for district chief within the Davenport Fire Department, all of which are currently filled.

Local 4 News reached out to the City of Davenport.

A spokesperson declined to comment.
