Funeral services held for family of 6 killed in fire

Shaw family died in a house fire last month in Lost Nation

LOST NATION, Illinois - Services were held for a family of six who died in a house fire last month in Lost Nation.

Timothy A. Shaw, 39, Melissa (Duncan) Shaw, 37, Ethen Shaw, 17, LeAnne Shaw, 15, Hailey Shaw, 12, and Dylan Shaw, 11, all died from smoke inhalation Nov. 21.

EARLIER REPORT

The Ogle County Sheriff's Office has released the names of the six family members killed in a fire near Dixon early Tuesday morning.

They are 39-year-old Timothy Shaw, his 37-year-old wife Melissa, and children 17-year-old Ethen Shaw, 15-year-old LeAnne Shaw, 12-year-old Hailey Shaw and 11 year-old Dylan Shaw.  All died from smoke inhalation.

Ethen is believed to be the person who called 911 from the basement of the home stating he was trapped and could not get out.

EARLIER REPORT

The Ogle County Sheriff says the fire that took the lives of a family of six began as a report of smoke in the basement to dispatch by a teenager living in the home.

By the time firefighters with the rural Dixon Fire Department along with Sheriff's Deputies arrived, however, the home was nearly completely in flames.

What happened in the minutes in between is the focus of the investigation by the State Fire Marshall's Office, but officials are confident the fire is not suspicious in nature. The home has a propane tank, but it was intact when firefighters arrived and they were able to shut it off. Other possible ignition sources which could have ignited a large, sudden fire are being investigated.

The Sheriff says the dispatch tape gives no indication that smoke detectors were going off at the time the fire was reported.

Neighbors say the family of six, whose names have not yet been released, had just moved into the home in the spring, and all four kids were of school age.

Supt. Margo Empen of Dixon Public Schools confirms that one victim attended Madison Elementary, one attended Reagan Middle School and two kids attended Dixon High School. Administrative staff, teachers, counselors and social workers at the impacted buildings are making themselves available throughout the day to both offer support and provide as much information as they were able to.

School officials are also looking for ways in which they can reach out to families this evening to let them know about community resources through the holiday since the district will go on Thanksgiving break after classes today. School officials will provide the same resources when school re-opens on Monday.

EARLIER REPORT

Six people died during an early morning house fire in Ogle County.

Several fire departments responded to 204 N. Miami Dr. in Lost Nation shortly after midnight, just north of the Lee County line. When firefighters arrived, the home was completely engulfed in flames. Eight different departments were on scene, but all six people inside died. The Ogle County Sheriff's Department confirms the victims are a mother, father, and four children. No other information, including names and ages of the victims has been released.

The victims' names have not been released at this time. Police and the state fire marshal's office are investigating the cause.
