Niabi Zoo officials announced Tuesday that their male giraffe calf, Genesis, was euthanized due to ongoing difficulty recovering from a leg injury.

His left front leg was injured a few days after birth when his mother, Mimi, inadvertently stepped on him damaging a tendon.

Zoo Director Marc Heinzman said reparative surgery was not possible because he was growing faster than he could heal.

The calf was sent to the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine for a full animal autopsy.
