Henry County board member's social media post gets negative reactions

GENESEO, Ill. - A Henry County Board member is facing a backlash after he made controversial posts on social media.

Jacob Waller and his girlfriend were part of a local radio station's "Cutest Couple Contest" which was eventually won by a same-sex couple.

Waller shared the station's post and added his own comments, saying that if he and his girlfriend had gained 150 pounds and changed their sexual orientation they would have won the contest.

Many people responded by saying even though Waller has the right to free speech, his post on a public forum was inappropriate for someone in public office.

Waller spoke with Local 4 News on Friday afternoon, saying he was baited into making comments that compared gay people to rats and cockroaches, and has since apologized for them.

He says the incident has attracted attention from across the U.S. and even other countries, including violent threats against him and his family.

Waller also said he doesn't think that the controversy will affect his ability to serve on the County Board.
