Hundreds of St. Ambrose students give back to their community

It's their annual 'Bee the Difference Day'

DAVENPORT, Iowa -  Students at St. Ambrose University braced some chilly weather to go out and make a change in their community.
A gymnasium that is normally quiet on a Sunday afternoon was packed with students ready to volunteer.

"I got a group together from the marching band and we just kind of go out in the community and get our name out there and have everyone see us and see how Ambrose likes to give back to the community," says sophomore Natalie Jones.

The student government hosts the event and has watched it grow year after year.

"It's a great way to get to know our neighbors and to help the people who live around our campus and have a positive impact," says student.

For some freshmen seeing groups come together makes being a St. Ambrose bee that much more exciting.

"It makes me kind of proud to be a part of a university that really wants to make the community a better place by picking it up and making it look pretty," says freshman Kaylynn Smith.

And one special project is bringing a pop of color to downtown Davenport.
A few students helped put up a mural on 3rd street. The artwork was part of a collaboration by residents at the heritage who watched their visions come to life.

"Well just even seeing everybody come out and watch it's pretty cool," says freshman Teagan Conroy. "It's really gratifying actually, everybody's like really excited about it and it's kind of like making this outside area a little bit more exciting for them."

It's a project that's been in the works for several months and made its debut on Sunday.

"I met with all the tenants, we talked about their interests, what they thought was important to them as a community here at the heritage," says artist Colleen Tomlinson. "We did a lot of things that they enjoyed. They wanted a really positive, colorful, uplifting, you know, happy images."

While St. Ambrose students spend most of the year spread out across different groups on campus, they say giving back is something that brings all of them together.

"Come together for one day and go out and help out, it's great."
