Illinois Public Health: Rehabilitation center worker helps sell resident's house

The center is now facing a $2,200 fine for financial abuse

Rock Island, Ill. - An Illinois state agency fines a Rock Island rehabilitation center after an employee aided in facilitating the sale of a bipolar patient's house.

An investigation by Illinois' Department of Public Health found fraudulent activity by an employee at St. Anthony's Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Its report shows a patient's house was sold at the urging of the employee, with it being sold for much less than it was worth.

Public Health says their investigation found it was sold to an employee's husband two years ago for $10,000.

The house was worth about $83,000 and later sold for $95,000.

When investigators talked with an administrator, the administrator said the employee did a similar thing while working at another facility.

The admin added it shouldn't have happened. Even though there is nothing specific in their policies to prohibit such action, it was understood.

Staff at St. Anthony's told investigators the resident was upset about being told to sell their house. The resident also didn't have an attorney for the sale, and no appraisal was done.

When speaking with investigators, the resident said they were told to sell their house and didn't know there were other options.

St. Anthony's now faces a $2,200 fine.
