Iowa Supreme Court heads to school

Justices with the Iowa Supreme Court are visiting with students

Justices on the Iowa Supreme Court stepped out of their usual confines and headed to the classroom today.

The seven members of the state's highest court are in Davenport to hear oral arguments tonight to provide more exposure to their proceedings outside of Des Moines.

Before that, Justice Brent Appel met with students at Davenport West High School.

It's a way for them to learn more about the Judicial Branch from the lower courts to the highest court, which can differ greatly from what they see on television.

Davenport West High School Social Studies Teacher Steve Baldry said, "They see what's on Law and Order or some television show and the actual process o the court can be quite complex beyond just the trial we're used to seeing."

Iowa Supreme Court Justice Brent Appel said, "Get's students more involved and gets those gears turning, and so I think all of the justices go to schools on a regular basis and we're hoping we can educate the future citizens about how the court system operates."

The other justices will visit students Friday in Davenport, Eldridge, and Bettendorf high schools.
