LeClaire homeowners one step closer to stopping Kwik Star

The Planning and Zoning Commission voted against the proposal

LECLAIRE, Iowa -  Homeowners in LeClaire are celebrating a small victory tonight. The city's Planning and Zoning Commission is recommending city council not re-zone a controversial lot.

The commission only gives recommendations to the city council, but now they need four out of the five council members to approve the plans.

Homeowners brought most of the opposition at last night's discussion, but commission member Barb Ritter said  it was the impact Kwik Star might have on businesses that swayed her.

Local 4 spoke with business managers and owners in LeClaire today. One manager said neighbors will keep shopping local gas stations and convenience stores, but they will lose the business of people passing through.

That's a risk Ritter didn't want to take.

"[Looking at] the tax revenue that would come from that property versus the potential revenue that would be lost if we lost similar businesses ... we probably wouldn't really gain anything and then we would have an empty building," Ritter said.

Ritter said she doesn't know how the commission's decision will influence council members. They will vote on the proposal Jan. 22.
