Local 4's Finest: Emilia Porubchin

QC Teen earns National Recognition

BETTENDORF, Iowa - A Quad Cities teenager earned some national recognition for helping others in the community.

Emilia Porubchin is a high school senior who isn't limiting herself to the classroom.

"She's truly in it for the other people," says Leigh Ann Schroeder, a history teacher at Rivermont Collegiate in Bettendorf.

Schroeder wasn't surprised when Emilia won the Bryan Cameron Impact Scholarship.

It's an award given to a dozen kids across the country for making an impact in their communities and beyond.

Emilia was recognized for her work in the early detection of lung cancer for patients in the QCA.

"I started analyzing results of screenings, and found that the screening was effective," explains Emilia, "basically it was a lot of number crunching."

The teen was invited to share her research at an all-expenses paid conference in Vienna, Austria, where she also met with survivors.

"It's nice knowing that my work had some purpose, and getting to witness that in action."

Schroeder says Emilia isn't in it for personal gain.

"She does it to help people and is truly genuine about it," the teacher says. "She's not in it for her resume or college."

College Counselor Bonnie Campbell says what makes Emilia unique is her ability to look at things a different way, "and not only that, but look across subjects and across majors, and integrate that information and share that information."

Emilia also created an online fine arts gallery for writers, performers, and artists - called the Pounce Fine Arts Gallery.

"I was looking for a community for local students to share their work in writing, but then realized if we put this online, you'll have flexibility to include different types of media."

Campbell says the teen is not one to shy away from something because she might fail.

"She is someone who has gone beyond our curriculum by taking classes online or thru summer programs and all of that shows she is willing to take risks just for the pure joy of learning."

"She just leads by example," says Schroeder, "and i think that's where her impact comes in. When she leaves, she will leave that as a lasting legacy."

Emilia Porubchin, making her mark on the QC and the world, is one of Local 4's Finest.
