Local 4's Finest: Mike Van Hulle

Davenport teacher uses tacos to educate students

DAVENPORT, Iowa - A Quad Cities teacher is using tacos to get his students to experience the world.

"I was getting bored every day teaching grammar, and I wanted something exciting for the kids."

Davenport North Teacher Mike Van Hulle created "Taco Club" as part of the high school's RTI program.

He's partnering with local chefs to get kids excited about food culture, Spanish, and be more engaged in the world around them.

"When kids like school, they're going to perform a lot better," he says, "so this is one of those things to get kids to enjoy their education and learn at the same time."

One of the best parts about "Taco Club" is not only learning about the cuisine, but sampling it too.

But Los Compadres owner Juan Garcia says it's about more than just tacos, enchiladas, and spicy foods.

He leads a game of Mexican bingo - something he enjoyed playing as a kid.

Garcia wants to show that the Hispanic community is growing in the QC.

"This whole world is in front of them," he says, "the sky is the limit, so they can be anything they want - it's so special in this multicultural country."

While most students just like eating the food, freshman Taylor Snyder sees the benefits.

"I know a lot more about Spanish food and culture because of just the different types of food they've brought in," she says.

"I want to learn more about the culture of Mexico and Spain," says junior Jacob Acosta, "and learn about different types of tacos - not just ground beef and cheese."

Van Hulle's goal with "Taco Club" is getting kids to enjoy being at school.

"They come in thinking tacos, and they leave with a lot more understanding that the world is a big place and there's so many great things out there."

For getting kids excited about school and learning, Mike Van Hulle is one of Local 4's Finest.
