Local business leaving Illinois for Iowa

Lewis Machine and Tool Company has been in Milan since the 1980s

A local business will leave Illinois for a million dollar expansion in Iowa.

The Lewis Machine and Tool Company broke ground today where it will build a new facility in Eldridge.

The company has been in Milan for years.

The $7 million facility will be 75,000 square feet in all.

The company says it will keep the same number of employees and could add more as operations grow.

"The current facility that we have is about 27,000 square feet, we're also in another facility which is about 15,000 sq feet, and renting about another 20,000 square feet," said president Carl Lewis. "So we'll be able to incorporate all those facilities into one centralized area."

Managers say the move to Iowa will save money.

They hope to open the new building this summer.
