Local high school providing free nutritious meals to students

Officials proud to help kids who may not be able to afford those meals at home

A local high school is providing free nutritious meals to students this month.

Students in the Rock Island-Milan school district can get free breakfast and lunch at the Rock Island High School cafeteria.

Officials said they are proud to help kids who may not be able to afford those meals at home.

"It's an accomplishment to be able to come to work and know that you provided a breakfast and a lunch to students that couldn't afford a lunch, or breakfast, or maybe a student that just didn't have the self-esteem, or whatever, to eat," said Beth MacKenna, director of nutrition services.

Program officials also said the total number of meals provided to students has increased over the last three years.
