New life for former Kewanee juvenile detention center

SPRINGFIELD, Ill - The Illinois Department of Corrections is preparing to open its first Life Skills Reentry Center in Kewanee, using the facilities of the juvenile detention center that closed last year. IDOC says Kewanee is one of three Life Skills Reentry Centers scheduled to open; all are part of Governor Bruce Rauner's plan to reduce the prison population and restructure Illinois' criminal justice system.  According to IDOC spokesperson Nicole Wilson, Kewanee will begin receiving inmates as early as February 16, 2017.

According to an IDOC press release, the Life Skills Reentry Center will help offenders with education, job readiness, and cognitive behavior therapy courses. People with one to four years left on their sentences will be eligible for placement at Kewanee. Rauner says the courses will help men and women build a strong foundation for life outside the prison and learn skills for readjusting to society.

The Department announced the Life Skills Reentry plan last June, after the Department of Juvenile Justice announced it was closing the Kewanee facility. IDOC says since then, they've been working to prepare Kewanee for adults, including security measures and training Kewanee staff members on how to communicate with adult offenders. The Department is working to open a similar center for men at the former Illinois Youth Center in Murphysboro and a center for women at Logan Correctional Center in Lincoln.
