Longtime alderman, JDC volunteer dies in TPC accident

UPDATE: A longtime Rock Island alderman and John Deere Classic volunteer died today as the result of a "tragic accident" at TPC Deere Run.

Tournament officials announced that Charles “Chuck” Austin, 68, of Rock Island died of injuries apparently suffered in an accident at the golf course while working to prepare the tournament site for next week’s event.

"Chuck was a very special member of our volunteer force," John Deere Classic tournament director Clair Peterson said. "On behalf of Chuck’s 1,750 fellow volunteers, title sponsor John Deere, the tournament staff, the players, and the PGA Tour, I want to express our deepest sympathies to Chuck’s wife, Ann, and all of his loved ones."

Austin was a Rock Island alderman from 2004 until losing his seat in April.

Austin joined Local 4 News in April for our "Rock Island on the Record" segment. He reflected on his 13-year tenure on the city council.
