Name of man injured in train-car crash released

Chanel Charles' car was pushed approximately two city blocks in West Liberty

A Lone Tree man was sent to the hospital in critical condition Sunday after his car was struck by a train and pushed for two blocks in West Liberty.

West Liberty Police responded to a report of an Iowa Interstate train hitting a car in the 200 block of North Calhoun on Sunday around 12:53 p.m. The car was pushed approximately two city blocks, coming to rest on the north side of Prairie Street.

Chanel Charles, 44, was the driver and the only occupant of the vehicle and had to be extricated by West Liberty Fire and Ambulance using the "Jaws of Life." Charles was flown by helicopter to University of Iowa Hospitals in critical condition.

The crash remains under investigation. The crash occurred at an intersection with working flashing red crossing lights.
