Students took part in National Summer Learning Day in the Quad Cities.
Dozens of children gathered at Frances Willard Elementary School in Rock Island Thursday. That's where former NFL player Jimmie Bell talked to kids about his life experiences, encouraging them to strive for success.
The children were also talked to about the importance of reading throughout the summer as a way to maintain or improve their reading levels.
"When kids are off in the summer time we have what's called that summer slide where they start to fall behind. We do this so that they maintain reading levels and they keep their minds active in the summer because we know it's needed," said Dan McNeil, Executive Director, Spring Forward Learning Center.
Spring Forward Learning Center teamed up with the National Summer Learning Association to host the event.
