Natural healing for Quad Cities veterans

QC nonprofits unite to make a difference for vets

BETTENDORF, Iowa - Hike, paddle, heal.

Three actions DownRange Excursion, a new non-profit, uses to help clients suffering from PTSD.

"You're paddling, you're digging it out, you're hiking, it's Vitamin D, it's light therapy, it's natural healing," says Kevin Flack.

Founder and army veteran Kevin Flack says he tried countless medications to battle the disorder and nothing worked until he began to get physically active.

"I haven't had a panic attack in almost a year,I haven't had those anxiety issues, I haven't had those depression issues," says Flack.

Now Flack is helping other veterans get their lives back.

After nearly two months, members say the program is working.

"I'm sleeping better," says veteran Tim Lue. "I can go three days without any sleep and still carry on, now I can actually sleep and I can actually think, I function better."

"You actively have other people pushing you to be your best, there's a sense of purpose, helping other veterans reaching out to them, there's a sense of belonging," says veteran Kaleb Wadsworth.

But DownRange Excursion is just one piece of the puzzle.

Flack says he is working with Healing On the Fly, another local organization, to create a resource hub for veterans and service members.

"We bring all the nonprofits together in the Quad Cities... and we source guys out to them," says Flack.

They want to provide each veteran with as many healthy alternatives as possible and let them know there are options beyond prescribed medications or substance abuse.

Many organizations are already on board to help do whatever it takes to keep saving lives.

"I've been depressed since 2010 and now I finally see a light at the end of the tunnel, finally," says Lue.
