New facility, new product

Monsanto cuts ribbon on expansion

MUSCATINE, Ill. -  Monsanto Muscatine cut the ribbon on a multi-million dollar expansion Friday.

The expansion has been several years in the making. The company announced the plans 2 years ago. Monsanto employs over 400 people in Muscatine, and this expansion created over 30 new jobs.

"It's definitely a portion of the plant. It adds to that," said Iowa Secretary of Agriculture Bill Northey. "And certainly allows this to be more productive and more families to be able to have jobs from this plant."

"Being able to offer high paying great jobs to the community is always a great place to be able to help that community to grow," said Monsanto Muscatine plant manager Shawn Schrader. "Muscatine is a phenomenal community today with a lot of companies and a lot of corporate investment, and it's great that we are able to expand and grow our operations to support the local Muscatine community."

The purpose behind the facility is the production and distribution of a brand new product, Xtendimax. Xtendimax is a new chemical that helps farmers fight weeds, especially ones that have become resistant.

"We talked about adding to have 7-9 billion people in the world by 2050, there's going to be a lot more hungry people in the world and one more tool that we can offer to allow farmers to increase or have more consistent yields on their farms it's going to be a great day for all of us."

"With the scale of agriculture in Iowa, we get very proud of our farmers and we should be," said Northey. "But it does take all these other businesses that we sometimes don't think about. This is part of making our Iowa farmers successful is plants like this right in our own communities."

Mosanto has been located in Muscatine since 1961, and Schrader says he anticipates more expansion in the future.

"We've been here over 55 years, we would like to be here another 55."
