One dead in Davenport shooting

DAVENPORT, Iowa - A man died in a Davenport shooting Friday morning.

Davenport Police responded to the 500 block of West 14th Street at 9:03 a.m. after a report of shots fired in the area. Officers located a man who had been shot. He was transported to Genesis East where he was pronounced dead.

"This morning I saw it on Facebook, somebody went live with it," said Johnny Byrd, who lives not far from the scene. "I went to work and I drove by and I saw it and I knew some guys that were standing around so I was like 'What's going on.'"

Byrd says that this event was unnerving.
"Just driving by was scary, just driving by, and then you see it and it kind of hits home and I drive by this block every day."
He says this isn't something new to him. He says in his own neighborhood, he hears shots often. He also finds that a lot of the times he knows the person involved.
"I wonder if anyone ever thinks about when you see your friend dead," said  "That can't be motivating to live your life every day when people you know are just dropping like flies."
This area of the city is not new to violence, though. It sits in the 4th Ward, overseen by the longest tenured alderman Ray Ambrose. He says a lot of this happens in his ward, and a big reason it does is because people who commit crimes can easily get back on the streets.
"Iowa's got the lowest bonds in the country that allows these criminals who have terrorized neighborhoods and families back out, sometimes within hours, to continue terrorizing our great city," said Ambrose.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is encouraged to call the Davenport Police Department at 563-326-6125 or submit an anonymous tip via the mobile app entitled "CityConnect Davenport, IA" or "CrimeReports by Motorola."
