One shot by deputy during firearms, drugs investigation

VIOLA, Illinois - UPDATE: The names of the man who was shot and the deputy who shot him have been released by the Mercer County Sheriff's Department, as well as the name of the other man arrested. 

Deputy Franklin Wade shot Donovan C. Smith, 28, of Sherrard during a Mercer County Sheriff's Department investigation involving illegal firearms and drugs in rural Viola, Illinois, on Tuesday night.

Charges for Smith are pending, but Alex T. Cady, 29, of Preemption, is being charged with two counts of felon in possession of a firearm, armed violence and possession of a stolen firearm.

One person was shot Tuesday night during a Mercer County Sheriff's Department investigation involving illegal firearms and drugs in rural Viola, Illinois.

The injuries were not life-threatening and the person was transported to UnityPoint Trinity West in Rock Island by ambulance.

Another person was taken into custody and transported to Mercer County Jail.

Both are facing multiple charges, including felon in possession of a weapon, possession of stolen firearms, possession of methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

The shooting is being investigated by the Mercer / Henry County Major Crime Task Force.

Mercer County Deputies were assisted by New Windsor and Viola first responders.
