Private psychiatric hospital gets final approval

SBC plans to break ground on construction in Bettendorf this spring

A proposed private psychiatric hospital planned for Bettendorf has cleared its final approval with the city.

Last night alderman approved the land use and site plan for Strategic Behavioral Health’s planned 72-bed inpatient facility to be built on land south of Unity Point's Bettendorf hospital between Utica Ridge and Interstate 74.

The Tennessee-based for-profit company was granted a certificate of need for the facility in July over strong objections from both local health care systems.

SBC plans to break ground on construction in the spring and has told Local 4 News that it chose this area, in part, because of the market's need for more in-patient psychiatric beds.

According to the treatment advocacy center, Iowa ranks dead last in the number of available inpatient psychiatric beds.

They recommend a minimum of 50 beds per 100,000 to provide minimally adequate treatment for individuals with severe mental illness.

Iowa had 2 beds per 100,000 residents in 2016.

Eight Iowa communities have seen psychiatric units or hospitals close in recent years. They are Mt. Pleasant, Keokuk, West Union, Iowa Falls, Fort Dodge, Clarinda, Creston, Oskaloosa.
