QC rowers win 2 national championships

Y Quad Cities Rowing wins fourth consecutive title in quadruple sculls

A local rowing team brought home two titles and a bronze medal this week from USRowing’s Youth National Championships in Sarasota, Florida.

Eight junior women rowers fielded three boats for Y Quad Cities Rowing, setting a record with their fourth straight championship in the quadruple sculls event.

The quadruple sculls team included two rowers from past winning squads: Pleasant Valley senior Caroline Sharis and recent Davenport Assumption graduate Annie Phillips. Sharis was member of the victorious 2015 and 2016 boats and Phillips was part of the 2016 squad. Two newcomers completed the quad team: recent Bettendorf graduate Cameron Blunk and PV sophomore Taylor English. PV sophomores Brenna Morley and Delaney Evans and Bettendorf juniors Morgan Beghtol and Kyra Vanderweele rounded out the team.

The team’s final tally of three medals matches a team record achieved previously in 2014 (also two gold, 1 bronze) and 2015 (1 gold, 1 silver, 1 bronze).
