Many Quad Citians kicked off the holiday breaking a sweat at the Firecracker run in East Moline.

Thousands hit the streets for the annual race, but the Firecracker run is more than just a 5k.

The event also boasts a hilly 10k, a kiddie 'fun run', the National Bank mile, and the famous hospital bed races.

All that action is why race officials think this run is so popular.

"To have a successful event you have to have something for everyone for the entire family," said Race Director Joe Moreno. "You know, a family rate, the 5k which is easy a nice walk which is easy and flat. A 10k that is hilly and challenging, the kids races and the hospital bed races that are getting ready to start. You have to have everything and a lot of fun involved."

One thing race coordinators are looking to add for next year is a wheelchair race.

They say a lot of people in wheel chairs come out every year, and they want to find more ways for them to participate in the fun.
