Rock Island Fire Chief breaks down changes to city's fire code

Automatic sprinklers now required in new homes

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Rock Island recently adopted new fire and building codes back in November. The update requires all new homes to have automatic sprinkler systems.

Rock Island Fire Chief Jeff Yerkey joined us on Local 4 News to explain why the change was made. He says studies show 77% of all structure fires occur in residential properties, and 80% of all fire-related deaths occur in residential structure fires. To hear more on which homes had the rule already and more on the research that supports the change, watch the interview above.
