Rock Island schools begin new school year without state spending plan

The district is relying on reserve funds to stay open

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. - Rock island-Milan School District #41 Superintendent Mike Oberhaus is facing a situation like many other districts in Illinois, who are trying to stay afloat in the absence of a state-wide school spending plan.

Rock Island schools have strategically built up a cash reserve for a number of years, that will help tremendously during this time. But the help Oberhaus truly wants, must come from the capitol.

"We're relying on the state not to use students as a political pawn," Oberhaus said. "That they actually do what they need to do, and fund education timely."

For rock island, their reserves will last them until around late-november.
Oberhaus says funds need to be released before then, to ensure children's needs, across the state, are being met.

"Every child is deserving of an adequate and equitable education," Oberhaus said. "So, they need to compromise if need be, but get it done. And, done quickly."

Oberhaus says even though their district has plans in place to avoid school closures, that is still an unfortunate possibility.

"Our hope is that it won't come to that," says Oberhaus. "We want to have a great year in our schools, with our kids without all of this. We don't need this. We don't need this distraction. We need to be focused on helping our students learn and be successful."

Oberhaus says Rock Island schools' reserve funds will last them until around late-November.
