UPDATE: Interstate 80 open after semi fire shut down traffic

Westbound lanes closed for about 5 hours

A semi fire closed down both directions of I-80 in Bettendorf Thursday.

The semi pulled off to the side of the road but the fire was so bad that crews shut down traffic in both directions. Eastbound traffic eventually started running again about an hour and a half later. Westbound traffic was closed for about 5 hours while crews worked to put the fire out. A hazmat crew was also called in. We have called all departments on scene and are waiting for more information on what was in the semi that caught fire and if anyone was injured.

Crews continue to work to clear a semi that caught fire and caused huge backups on I-80 on Thursday morning.

The fire happened on I-80 westbound at mile marker 304 near LeClaire.

For the first couple of hours traffic was stopped in both directions while emergency responders put out the fire which completely destroyed the cab of the truck and most of the trailer and its contents.

Around 11 o'clock eastbound traffic was starting to move again.

The truck's driver was able to escape without injury.

As of about 12:15 cars that could make the turn were being allowed to access emergency U-turn areas so they could make it out of the traffic jam, but dozens of semis are still stuck in place.

Local 4 News will have the latest on when the road is open again as it becomes available.
