Strategies to combat seasonal illnesses

Health Coach Aaron Howard gives us tips to beat the flu & SAD.

Aaron Howard with Howard Health Quarters joined FOX 18's Brittany Price in studio to discuss two common illnesses that are triggered around the late fall and winter seasons.

First, is the flu. Howard said in functional medicine he understands that sugar provides a great environment for the growth bacteria and viruses. Large consumption of sugar, especially artificial sugars, can suppress the immune system which opens the door for illness. During these seasons we have Halloween candy, as well as Thankgiving and Christmas treats. This is one of the reasons so many us are prone to getting the Flu. A good supplement to have around is vitamin D3 to help boost and maintain a strong immune system.

Another common seasonal illness is seasonal affective disorder (SAD). It is a common form of depression that occurs in the fall and winter. One major contributing factor is that we do not the receive the sun exposure we usually do during the warmer months. The sun is the best source of production of vitamin D3. Vitamin D3 controls thousands of cellular processes including the function of our immune system, hormones and brain chemicals like serotonin which affects your mood. Less sun equals less production of Vitamin D3.
