Testimony begins in Sanders-Galvez trial

Prosecutor says Jorge Sanders-Galvez and his cousin killed Kedarie Johnson

After two full days of jury selection, the state made its case about what led to the death of a popular gender-fluid Burlington teen.

A federal prosecutor says Jorge Sanders-Galvez and his cousin Jaron Purham killed 16-year-old Kedarie Johnson after following him as he left a grocery store back in March 2016.

Prosecutors said the co-defendants in this case were known to have sex with different girls -- even sometimes together.

The night of Johnson's death, prosecutors said the teen was dressed like a girl and the defendants took they were staying.

"Kedarie Johnson was a friendly high school student with a bright future, but that future was stolen from him," Federal Hate Crimes Prosecutor Christopher Perras said. "On March 2 of last year, Kedarie Johnson was kidnapped, suffocated and then executed."

The defense decided not to present an opening statement. The state is now in the process of calling witnesses -- including two of Johnson's friends, a neighbor who called 911 and law enforcement.

Sanders-Galvez has pleaded not guilty to first-degree murder.
