Tonight at 10: Handcuffed by Mental Illness Part 2

Mike Mickle looks at disturbing inmate behavior at Rock Island County Jail

Every day corrections officers in our area find themselves supervising mentally ill people who wound up in the justice system by default.

Last night, Local 4 News brought viewers inside the "segregation unit" of the Scott County Jail.

Mentally ill inmates there are kept under close watch so they don't hurt themselves or others.

Prisoners, jailers and counties are being "Handcuffed by Mental Illness" in order to keep sometimes criminally insane individuals off the streets.

"Today we have nine people in custody awaiting these bed spaces at these mental health facilities," said Rock Island County Sheriff Gerry Bustos.

Still to come, some of the most graphic displays of disturbing inmate behavior as we take a look inside the Rock Island County Jail.

That's coming up tonight only on Local 4 News at 10.
