Tourism remains a focus for LeClaire

Memorial Day kicks of busy season

LECLAIRE, Iowa - LeClaire is getting ready for tourist season with some new improvements.

"We've really worked hard on tourism for quite some time, and we have a great partner with the Quad Cities Convention and Visitor's Bureau," said Tourism Manager Cindy Bruhn. "But with the new businesses and attractions and things that's helped. People are just finding more and more here and spending more time."

Economic development and tourism have seen improvements leading up to summer 2017. The Twilight river cruise is adding 1.5 hour sightseeing cruises for Memorial Day Weekend, and every third Saturday until October.

West End Architectual Salvage opened over the winter, Rivers Edge Antiques & More opened a few weeks ago, and Pickers' Paradise opened for the season.

Flutter, a women's clothing store, opened this last Tuesday.

The distillery officially can sell cocktails July 1 for the first time. Wide River Winery starts their live music every Friday over the holiday weekend.

"Definitely first time visitors say 'Oh, I didn't know there was so much here',"said Bruhn.

The city also moved the Information Center. They will hold a ribbon cutting at the beginning to June.

Tourism is a big aspect in the river town. Dan Kjonegaard and his wife are from Southern California, and came to Des Moines for a truck show. They drove all the way to LeClaire to see the American Pickers' shop, Antique Archeology.

"It's beautiful," said Kjonegaard. "It really is a nice, nice town."

The Kjonegarards stayed to see the river view, and to grab a bite to eat.

"Since I've grown up here, just an amazing change and a lot, a lot more tourism activities going on here in LeClaire," said Tourism President Debbie Mulvania. "Our whole year is just packed, with a lot of great things happening."

"I mean, this is just ideal," said Kjonegaard.

There is also a 5-year plan for economic development that's in the beginning stages. That will include phase two of the downtown development, stretching towards Princeton. The next meeting for that will be June 6.
