7 hurt in SUV-van-train crash

Driver of van cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid accident

HILLSDALE, Ill. - UPDATE: Seven people were injured Thursday after a crash involving a train and two vehicles in rural Rock Island County near Joslin.

The Rock Island County Sheriff's Office responded around 5:10 a.m. to a report of an accident with injury at the railroad crossing of 38th Avenue North and 286th Street North involving two vehicles and a train.

According to the Rock Island County Sheriff's Office, a Toyota SUV occupied by three people was stopped at the crossing signal when it was struck by a Toyota van occupied by four people. The SUV was pushed through the railroad tracks, but the van was partially on the tracks when the train came through.

The occupants of both vehicles were transported to the hospital by ambulance and are expected to survive.

The driver of the van was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid an accident.

38th Avenue North was closed to all eastbound traffic from Interstate 88. All traffic was diverted to mile marker 10 for approximately two hours.

EARLIER REPORT

A train collided with a vehicle early Thursday morning near Hillsdale.

The Rock Island Sheriff's Department says the crash happened on 38th St. N. near the Tyson plant.

They are still investigating.

Officials haven't released a cause for the crash nor whether anyone was injured.
