Rock Island police say a second person has died after a shooting in Rock Island Monday.
Investigators say 94 year-old John Elliott died from multiple self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Police say he told a relative that he had shot his wife, 91 year-old Helen Elliott, and that he intended to kill himself. Helen Elliott was found dead after police forced their way into a home in the 3900 block of 20th Avenue. Police found John Elliott still alive but suffering from gunshot wounds. Investigators have determined it to be a murder/suicide attempt. John Elliott was taken to a Rock Island hospital. He was then transferred to a facility in Springfield where he succumbed to his injuries today.
The Rock Island County Coroner has identified the woman killed Monday in a Rock Island shooting.
Coroner Brian Gustafson says 91-year-old Helen Elliott died of a shotgun blast to the chest.
A second person in the home in the 3900 block of 20th Avenue also was shot but survived. There is no word on that person's condition.
Police went to the home after a relative of one of the people inside called 911, saying there was a suicidal person in the residence.
Officers were not able to make contact with anyone inside so the department's Emergency Response Team broke down the door and discovered the victims.
The shooting is still under investigation.
