Muscatine's Joe Wieskamp sets conference record, joins elite company

The future Hawkeye topped Ricky Davis' record of 1,619 career points

MUSCATINE, Iowa - After 20 years, it's time for Ricky Davis to move over. Joe Wieskamp is the new scoring king of the Mississippi Athletic Conference.

"It felt great," Wieskamp said. "Obviously people are questioning whether it was a travel or not, but I finished the play and was able to surpass it. It was a great feeling when it happened."

The Muscatine star began Tuesday's game nine points behind Davis' mark of 1,619. Wieskamp's second-quarter dunk broke the Davenport North alum's career record.

"To be honest, I haven't sat down and thought about it or really took it all in yet," Wieskamp said. "I was just so focused on trying to get that win for my teammates."

The achievement was a forgone conclusion if he stayed healthy entering his senior year. Still, coach Gary Belger said Wieskamp has taken his game to another level early this season.

"He's just much more assertive," Belger said. "He's a little bit stronger. He moves without the ball a lot better. He's obviously the best player in the state and he's really proven it in the first two or three games here. He'll continue to prove it."

Belger said that what makes Wieskamp's achievements even more impressive is that he's a stand-up kid away from the basketball court.

"It's really nice to see a good kid be rewarded," Belger said. "That makes it all worth it. He hasn't touched where he's going. I saw Peter Jok. We played against him for three years when I was up in Des Moines and Joe can do everything and more."

Roughly 550 points stand between Wieskamp and the Iowa Class 4A all-time scoring record. Wieskamp is coy about how much getting to that milestone would mean to him.

"Obviously, there's a lot of personal goals that I like to keep private," Wieskamp said. "But I don't really think about those too much."

After breaking Davis' record, Wieskamp will follow in his footsteps to Iowa next season. Is the NBA also in the future for the Muskies star? That remains to be seen.
