Steamwheelers football returning to QC

Team will play in CIF

The iWireless Center announced that Steamwheelers indoor football will return to the Quad Cities in 2018.

A press conference will be held Wednesday to officially announce the team, which will play in the Champions Indoor Football league (CIF) alongside teams like the Bloomington Edge, Omaha Beef and Sioux City Bandits.

The original Steamwheelers played in the af2, winning 37 of their first 38 games (including playoffs) on their way to the league's first two championships.

In 2000, QC finished 16-0 and won ArenaCup 68-59 over Tennessee Valley.

In 2001, the Steamwheelers finished 15-1 and won ArenaCup II 55-51 over Richmond.

Along the way, the Wheelers won one game in 2000 by a score of 103-3 over Greensboro.

The af2 disbanded in 2009. Some teams formed a new Arena Football League, taking over for their bankrupt former parent league. QC did not make the jump. In ten seasons, the Steamwheelers compiled a record of 108-53.
