A project years in the making is finally seeing the light of day Saturday, and that means more resources for area families.

Thanks to grants, community donations, and the hard work of many volunteers, the ribbon is being cut on new Family Enrichment Center in Davenport Saturday.

The Family Enrichment Center ‘s goal is to create a positive, reliable support system for underserved children and their families.

The center will be home to free pre-school Head Start programs and after school activities for local youth.

But what really sets the Family Enrichment Center apart is their parenting programs, which will help parents find jobs, do well in interviews, and offer any other assistance they need to be successful.

The organization has been around since 2008, mostly holding events at Goose Creek Park, which is why organizers say they chose to build a physical location in that same neighborhood.

"There's not a lot of resources that are close to these families. There's bussing out here but a lot of times, they have a hard time getting to where they need to go by bus or the school districts. So if we put the building out here, it's easy access for them. There's over 700 plus kids under the ages of 18 when we've done our research, so we saw this was a big need,” says Kathy Toft, a Board Member of the Family Enrichment Center.

The grand opening for the new Family Enrichment Center is Saturday from noon to three at Goose Creek Park.

The festivities include activities and games for kids, music, and food, and it's open to the public.
