There's a local man with a big honor that knows all about recycling and it's effects.

CNN's Hero of the Year, Chad Pregracke shares some easy tips to help you save some money and the environment.

"Just start small. The little things. Turn the light switch off when you're in a room not using it. Turning faucet off when you're not using that. Recycling I think is definitely good to do because it's those little things that add up to big things," said Pregracke.

Pregracke knows a thing or two about the environment.

His mission is to clean up America's waterways, one river at a time.

"It's the right thing to do. It's good to conserve America's resources," said Pregracke.

There's a lot of ways to go green. One of them is the color blue.

Recycle bins.

"Each year an average American throws away 1600 pounds of garbage,” said Pregracke. “Thirty-percent of that is paper. You can recycle a lot of that. That's a huge step right there."

Chad is no stranger to picking up other people's garbage.

In fact, it's what earned him the title of CNN’s Hero of the Year.

Traveling the country's waterways, picking up other people's garbage that could have easily been recycled.

"It's a shame people didn't do the right thing in the first place,” said Pregracke. “Recycling is a huge part in keeping the river clean and conserving America's resources.”
