If you want to help control the deer population, bring home some venison, or just get some fresh air, you have until 5:00 PM to get your application in for a deer hunting permit in Rock Island.
Rock Island kicked off their deer hunting program last year, and this season, they're hoping more hunters will want to get in the woods.
"With the full season i think it'll be a better year,” says Bill DeClerck, a Moline resident.
During last year's five week season, only six deer were killed by a total of 12 hunters.
Rock Island officials think the cold weather kept the hunters and the deer out of the elements.
But this year, the season is longer, starting on October 1st and running until January 18th of next year.
And in another effort to get more turn out, the number of hunting sites this year will jump from eight to 14.
"We’re hoping that the longer the session, the nicer weather at the beginning, gives more hunters more opportunities to harvest more deer,” says Jason Foy, Deputy Chief of the Rock Island Police Department.
If you want to apply for a deer hunting permit, you need to have it filled out and turned in by 5:00 PM Friday, August 22.
